Another ordinary day taking bus to work, I looked out the window of the bus and saw the same view of the Victoria Harbor. Same buildings, same harbor, same ships stopping by the pier, nothing seemed to be catching my eyes. Was it because I got used to the routine way to work? Or was it because I’ve got too used to the city I live in? As I recalled, when I was in Paris a few years ago with some friends, I was so impressed by the Eiffel Tower. It was like the prettiest thing I’d ever seen. From day time to night time, it was still the same Tower, yet I felt so differently looking at this metal infrastructure. In day time under the blue sky, the sunlight goes through the Tower and the Tower nicely matches with the white soft clouds; at night, the dark sky acts as an amazing natural background which gives prominence to the shiny Tower. Visiting the Eiffel Tower is definitely one of the must-dos for tourists in Paris, so as a tourist, I did so too. It doesn't cost you a lot to take the lift and go up to the top of the Eiffel Tower to see the beautiful view of Paris. At night, you can even see the Tower blinking with its sparkling lights in front of you, making you feel like being part of the stars in the sky. But a friend from Paris said to me, “I’ve never even gone up to the top of the Tower. Yes we Parisians know that it’s there, and that’s it. We pass by it and see it every single day and don’t really see the specialty you see.” That was kind of sad actually, don’t you think so? The beauty of the city is only seen by outsiders, and people within the city don’t even recognize that.
Back to Hong Kong, I always heard how tourists praised about this place’s night view and said it’s the Pearl of the Orient, thousands of tourists come to Hong Kong just to take a look at the. I wonder, is there something special about this Harbor which I’ve never found even though I pass by it all the time? I wish I could be like a tourist and take an angle which I’ve never tried before to look at this city. I wish to see what outsiders see in this city and learn to appreciate it more.
